George is a Senior Lecturer in Cultural Sociology specialising in psychosocial risk. His research on mental health and wellbeing in the music industry – from the UK and Denmark, to the USA and India – has impacted policy leading to the launch of telephone crisis helplines, therapeutic interventions and an industry-wide Codes of Conduct. His research combines quantitative and qualitative methods across psychology, sociology, public health and cultural economics to examine how working conditions shape mental health. His research has been published in journals including The Lancet, The Lancet Psychiatry, Poetics, Cultural Trends, and more. He was co-author of ‘Can Music Make You Sick? (UWP, 2020), author of ‘The England No One Cares About’ (Goldsmiths Press/MIT Press, 2024), and his third book is entitled ‘Why Musicians Suffer, and What Can Be Done About It’ (forthcoming, Oxford University Press). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health.
