State of the Nations Report Launch: Migration in UK Creative Occupations and Industries

On Tuesday 10 June we launched Creative PEC’s latest State of the Nations report, ‘Migration in UK Creative Occupations and Industries’.

Written by our research partners at Newcastle University, the report explores UK visa data and creative occupations aiming to fill the evidence gap on immigrants within the creative industries. It highlights trends and growth in geographical distribution of the visa holders and where they are from.

The event was be hosted online and included an introduction to the research, a panel of guests providing expert response and a Q&A with the research team. Report authors are Dr Sara Maioli, Dr Daniel Simandjuntak, Dr Jonathan Jones and Professor Giorgio Fazio.

Meet the speakers

Madeleine Sumption

Dr Madeleine Sumption MBE

Director of The Migration Observatory, University of Oxford

Madeleine Sumption is the Director of the Migration Observatory. She is a policy specialist focusing on the impacts of migration policies and the role of migrants in the labour market.

Madeleine’s research interests include the design of immigration policies and their economic and social impacts, labour migration, and the interaction between the economics and politics of migration policies. Recent focus areas include government policies towards immigrant investors, the impacts of Brexit on the UK’s immigration system, and the implementation of the EU Settlement Scheme.

Madeleine is a member of the Migration Advisory Committee, an independent panel that advises the UK Government on migration issues. She gives an expert response and opinion on the research report.

Marta Foresti

Marta Foresti

Chair of Global Creative Economy Council and CEO of LAGO Collective

Marta is the founder and CEO of LAGO, a research and creative collective on migration, culture and the arts. Before creating LAGO Marta spent most of her career as an executive and senior advisor in leading research and policy organisations at global and national level.

She was Managing and Executive Director at ODI, a leading global affairs think tank where she established and led the institute migration and governance work and established ODI Europe. Marta is now Senior Visiting Fellow at ODI and she leads the Africa-Europe Mayors’ Dialogue. She is also a Senior Adviser at the Moleskine Foundation and Senior Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics and Birmingham University.

Marta brings her expert knowledge to the guest panel.

Sara Maioli

Dr Sara Maioli

Reader in Economics at Newcastle University Business School

Dr Sara Maioli is an applied economist with expertise in firm-level data. Her research interests relate to applying micro-econometrics techniques to issues in international economics, trade, labour and international business, applied industrial organisation and SMEs. Within Creative PEC, Sara contributes to the research on the international competitiveness of the creative industries, delving into issues related to exporting, foreign direct investment and migration.

Sara is one of the report authors and presented the research at the event.

Dr Daniel Simandjuntak

Dr Daniel Simandjuntak

Research Associate at Creative PEC

Daniel is a Research Associate for Creative PEC, researching policy of trade and internationalisation of UK’s creative industries. He was an advisor on food policy and trade to the deputy chief of staff at the Executive Office of the President of Indonesia after performing various roles in consumer banking with Standard Chartered Group in Singapore. He was a recipient of the Singapore International Foundation scholarship, Singapore’s MOE Pre-University and ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship, as well as Indonesia’s LPDP (Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education) Scholarship.

Daniel is one of the report authors and presented the research with Sara.
